Kamakura Daibutsu: Great Buddha

The Kamakura Daibutsu, or Great Buddha of Kamakura, is one of Japan’s most iconic and enduring symbols. Standing 13.35 meters tall, this bronze statue of Amida Buddha has watched over the seaside city of Kamakura for more than 750 years, drawing visitors from around the world to marvel at its beauty and tranquility.

A Testament to Resilience

Originally housed within a temple, the Daibutsu has stood in the open air since the 15th century after a tsunami swept away its shelter. Despite weathering centuries of natural disasters, the statue remains remarkably well-preserved, a testament to the craftsmanship of the Kamakura period.

Getting There

The Kamakura Daibutsu is located at Kotoku-in Temple, a short walk from Hase Station on the Enoden Line. It’s an easy day trip from Tokyo. Get there early! It was very busy mid-day when we returned from hiking.
