Kumano Shrine

This small shrine is located within the historic grounds of Zojo-ji Temple. Dedicated to the deities of the Kumano Sanzan shrines in Japan’s sacred Kii Peninsula.

One of the most intriguing features of Kumano Shrine is its association with the mythical three-legged crow, known as Yatagarasu. In Japanese mythology, this crow is a divine guide, symbolizing the will of heaven and the guiding light that leads people toward the right path. You’ll often find depictions of Yatagarasu within the shrine, serving as a reminder of the shrine’s spiritual connection to the ancient Kumano shrines and its role as a protector of travelers and seekers of guidance.
