Portugal Visa - source information

Here is some places I’ve gone to for source information - guidance related to obtaining a visa. Note - the VAST majority of advice is for a D7 or retirement visa. This is different than a digital nomad visa -> a much lower proof of income for one. BUT you MUST stay in Portugal for the majority of the year - 16 out of 24 months. There appears to be a ton of flexibility in this, but I have work needs, so am not going this route. Plus I meet the income requirements for the digital nomad visa. I’ve attended a few webinars and one immigration lawyer said the digital nomad visa was super easy and if you can, apply for that. The other said almost the opposite.

Currently it is unclear how taxes will work if you stay in Portugal over 183 days. It seems like you will be taxed at a 20% rate and should do that BEFORE you pay taxes in the U.S. FYI - while there is reciprocity, you will ALWAYS have to pay taxes (or at least file) in the U.S. as a U.S. citizen. Essentially this isn’t ironed out yet in the new Portuguese government, so who knowns. The old non-habitual residence tax system is getting overhauled also, so just keep looking. My plans for this first year (2025) is to NOT stay over 182 days. Not sure about 2026.
